School is out and summer is here!
You know what that means…
This time of year is normally filled with summer camps, playing on the playground at the park, concerts, and BBQs. This year, however, we are faced with a different challenge. How do we have fun with our families while we are grieving the loss of what summer used to be.
It is ok to grieve, but don’t lose site of what you have.
Lets me tell you a story…
A wise mother came up to her five-year-old daughter who was sitting at the kitchen table crying. “What’s the matter?” her mother asked her. “I really want cookies, but we don’t have any” her daughter replied. “I know. It is hard to want something that isn’t there.” her mother said with compassion in her voice. “Would you be willing to look with me in the cupboard to see what we can find?” The daughter was still sad, but agreed to follow her mother to the cupboard. She looked inside and found flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Her mother guided her to the fridge, and there she found eggs and butter. “We have nothing” the daughter pouted. “It may look like we have nothing, but when we put it all together we might find that we have more than we thought we did.” Her mother said encouragingly and she guided her child in how to put the ingredients together to bake their very own cookies.
Maybe you are feeling like this little girl right now. Just like the little girl in the kitchen crying, it is easy to feel discouraged when we are alone without the comforts around us that we normally have. Sometimes we need someone to come alongside us and help us to see what we have and the opportunity before us. If this is you, I ask you to consider what would happen if you put the ingredients of your life right now together. You may find that you have more than you thought you did.
