A Body-Centered Approach to Healing

Somatic therapy is a holistic approach that recognizes the connection between the mind and body. Our experiences are not only held in our thoughts and emotions, but can also show up through physical sensations, tension, movement patterns, and the ways we respond to stress. Somatic work creates an opportunity to slow down, become more aware of these responses, and develop a deeper sense of connection with yourself.

My approach to somatic therapy has developed through years of working with trauma, stress, and the ways difficult experiences can affect both emotional and physical wellbeing. In my work as a psychologist, I have seen how traditional talk therapy can be incredibly valuable while also recognizing that there are times when words alone may not fully capture what someone is experiencing. Incorporating body-centered approaches can offer another way to understand and work with patterns that may feel deeply rooted or difficult to access.

Through trauma-informed yoga therapy, Somatic Experiencing informed techniques, and a Sensorimotor Psychotherapy informed approach, I support clients in noticing what is happening in the body without judgment or pressure. This may include developing awareness of physical sensations, recognizing patterns of activation or shutdown, exploring movement, practicing grounding, and building greater capacity to stay present with difficult emotions or experiences.

I believe somatic therapy can be a valuable approach for people who want to feel more connected to themselves and better understand the relationship between their emotions, thoughts, and physical responses. Potential benefits of somatic therapy may include:

  • Increased body awareness
  • Greater emotional regulation
  • Improved ability to recognize stress responses
  • Increased sense of grounding and presence
  • Greater connection between mind and body
  • Development of supportive coping strategies
  • Increased self-awareness and self-compassion

I encourage you to reach out and explore whether a body-centered approach to therapy may be a supportive next step for you.

In health,
Lauren Simpson, Psy.D.

GENERAL TOPICS

Somatic Therapy Approaches

Trauma Informed yoga
Trauma Informed gentle yoga encourages students to practice self-love in a safe space. Classes are taught with specific cues to safety and empower students to choose movements that uniquely serve them without pressure to perform to an external standard. Hands on assists by the instructor are always optional and each student will be given a card to decide throughout the class whether or not they would like to be assisted. Specific breathing exercises and movements are taught to maintain regulation and reduce trauma reminders.
Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing informed work focuses on how stress and trauma can show up in the nervous system and body. By gently noticing physical sensations and responses, this approach can help you build awareness, increase regulation, and move through difficult experiences at a manageable pace.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Informed Approach
A Sensorimotor Psychotherapy informed approach brings attention to the connection between thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, posture, and movement. This body-centered work can help identify patterns that may be difficult to access through conversation alone and support a greater sense of stability, choice, and self-understanding.

IT'S TIME TO TAKE A STEP TOWARD THE LIFE YOU WANTReconnect With Your Body

Somatic therapy can help you develop a deeper awareness of how your body responds to stress, emotions, and past experiences. By learning to notice physical sensations, patterns of tension, and shifts in your nervous system, you can begin to respond to yourself with greater understanding and intention.

This work is not about forcing change or pushing through discomfort. It is about creating more space for choice, regulation, and connection so that you can feel more present in your body and more supported in your everyday life.
