Working from home while raising a family can sometimes feel overwhelming.
You want your children to feel loved and meet their needs while they are home with you…
BUT
You also don’t want to lose your job that provides you with the money to meet your children’s needs.
What do you do?
If this internal battle sounds familiar to you then you are not alone. Parents across the globe right now are doing the best they can to find a balance between work and home life without the natural boundary of an office.
Here are some tips for setting appropriate boundaries at home while you work:
1. Choose a spot that you will work from every day and keep it consistent
If you frequently change where in your house you work from it will be harder for your child to know when you are working and when you are available.
2. Set clear guidelines with your children about your work hours and keep them consistent
Some parents may choose to use the metaphor of school hours to help children understand when it is time for work and when it is time for play.
3. Let your children know what situations it is OK to interrupt you for help
Just like when you are working at the office, you are not going to work the whole day uninterrupted. You may still answer a phone call from a teacher if your child is not safe or is sick and needs your help. Make sure that your child knows that you are still there for them in emergencies and there will be time to discuss their favorite character from Frozen later.
