Want to know a secret?
Our energy level is more within our control than we know. 😲
Breathing is the only bodily function that is both within our conscious control and automatic. This means that we breathe without thinking about how to breath AND we can think about and change how we breathe.
WHAT A RELIEF!!
I am so glad that my body is designed to breathe on its own because I have a lot of other things on my mind. At the same time, if you are like me, then you may find that when life gets overwhelming you hold your breathe or don’t breathe as deeply as you may need.
As I prepare for labor and the upcoming journey into motherhood, I am well aware that breathe can be a secret weapon to manage the intensity of feelings both physical and emotional.
Try this…
Take a long exhale. I mean, COMPLETELY empty your body of all air.
Now, breathe in through your nose filling your lungs and stomach with air.
Do you notice a difference??
When we breathe in longer than we breath out, we are creating more energy in our body (better than a shot of espresso- AND ALL THE TIRED PARENTS LOOK AT ME SKEPTICALLY🙄). It’s true!!
When we breathe out longer than we breath in, we reduce our energy level and relax our body.
Let me put my nerd hat on for a second👩🎓
Our breathe connects the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system in our body. The sympathetic nervous system (activated by the inhale breath) controls our fight or flight response🏃♀️😤, while the parasympathetic nervous system controls the relaxation response (activated by the exhale breath)😌 after a threat has passed.
So the next time you are stressed out try deepening your exhale.
Need a lift to get you through the day? Try deepening your inhale.
